So dedicating a thread to old lesser known games that were awesome for whatever reason. So let's start with a few of my picks:
Robot Alchemic Drive:
A fun giant robot vs alien invaders style game. The controls are quite clunky but that may have been slightly intentional, since the robots are meant to be slow and lumbering. The voice acting is so awful it's hilarious but the game is a lot of fun once you get used to it.
Bujingai:
An absolutely fantastic hack 'n slash game. It has some of the smoothest gameplay I've ever seen, even to this day. Also worth noting, the character is based off of Gackt.
Blood Will Tell:
This one is a little different. It's a fairly standard hack 'n slash adventure game. You play a samurai who had all of his body parts stolen by demons when he was a baby. This old guy found you and replaced all of your parts with prosthetics. Now you're on a quest to kill all of the demons and get your body parts back. It's a pretty interesting game if nothing else lol.
Absolutely amazing old-school rpg, moving as hell, possibly my all time favorite rpg.. so honest and heartfelt. Please. play it ^_^
Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al Revis
Fun, lighthearted RPG with a heavy emphasis on synthesizing your own battle items!(and getting good grades…fufufufu) AWESOME BATTLE SYSTEM.. try it o,0.
Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Soulless Army
Awesome game in the megaten line, constantly overshadowed by the everpopular Persona Series. Play as Detective Demon Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha and summon demons to fight by your side as you solve the mystery of The Soulless Army, great game, fun demon capturing and fusion system, awesome battle system as you call many captured demons to fight by your side in battle.
Not really lesser known, but I was talking about it last week. If you don't like rhythm games this probably looks stupid, but the games are quite good if you so. By the same people who made Elite Beat Agents. There are two of them and if you have a DS (which were not region locked) you can import them and it will work just fine.
Warning Forever
An old free shooter where you fight a boss battle over an over again. The boss adapts to you by what parts you destroy before its core and what stuff ends up destroying you. It's a really fun time killer if you like shooters.
Sengoku Rance
The video probably doesn't appeal to most, but I had trouble finding a good video of the gameplay. A warning in advance that it is technically a porn game, so expect some "I raped her but she liked it so it's ok" crap if you don't skip the story (there is an option to turn the story off), but the gameplay itself if very solid if you like turn based strategy / territory capture.
I guess this game isn't so much lesser known anymore but back in the day Ico was a hidden gem. The games PS2 cover art was terrible and it turned many people away. The secret is pretty much out now I believe, but I do still run into people who have played Shadows of the Colossus and not Ico.
This is why many didn't play it out of the gate
They would have been much better off taking stills from the gorgeous artwork in the game.
The main character Ico is exiled from his village to an abandoned castle to die because he is different than other people. He meets a companion and they try to escape the castle together.
If you like beautiful games that make you feel as if you are playing in a living and breathing Monet with climbing, jumping, and swinging to solve puzzles give this game a try.
It has been released for PS3 in HD in The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection
Another game I used to play a lot when I was younger that other people thought was strange or really unheard of also had much jumping, swinging, and climbing to solve puzzles is Flashback for the Sega Genesis. It was released for other platforms but I feel the Sega Genesis version played the best, controls felt awkward for SNES. The loading and constant screen changes would probably drive people nuts today.
I pretty much feel the same way as this reviewer puts it. He even goes into how to get the higher jump which is surprising lol.
I used to enjoy platform puzzlers so much. Too bad my brain devolved into a hamster brain and I can't remember what happened 3 minutes ago. >.< I hope neuroplasticity will work for me in a good way and I can enjoy great games like these again someday. ^_^ b
lol but seriously, if you like point & click games, you might want to try it out. It's from Amanita Design, an indie dev. studio from the Czech Republic. The game is a freaking work of art :) I love it!
I got it through Steam, but you can also get it from their website: http://amanita-design.net/index.html (I noticed that now it's also available for iPad)
Without a proper gaming computer I've had to dig into my collection to entertain myself.
Shikigami no Shiro / Castle Shikigami
One of my favorite bullet hell shooters and the one that perfected the idea of "scraping". 2 is probably the most balanced shooter I have ever played. Each game has several different characters that each play very differently than the other which makes it quite fun for people who don't like to stick to one style.
Metal Wolf Chaos
Another older game that you have to import an XBox for. It's awesome if you like From Software and Mechs you can customize. And the reason is…
Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter
Not really an obscure game series, but not many people played it because it admittedly should not have been released under the Breath of Fire name. It's a survival RPG hybrid where there are no real places to rest, equipment found in dungeons is partially randomized so for a majority of the game you can't rely on it and walking slowly kills you. You are handed the "ultimate weapon" at the beginning which can pretty much annihilate everything in the game, but if you use it you die faster. The combat system is spectacular and more like a puzzle game than a simple hack n slash.
This one's definitely one of my favorites. The gameplay is a little dated but the story is fucking amazing IMO. It is easily the most depressing game story I've ever heard but, as a fan of tragic stories, I absolutely love it lol. If you have a Wii, at least give it a rent.
Gotcha Force
Now despite that being a Japanese trailer, this game is out in the US for the Gamecube. It's a very fast-paced full 3D team fighting game which is absolutely amazing. The story's pretty generic, kids with small robots that have incredibly destructive powers fighting to save the world apparently unbeknownst to all of the adults lol. The voice acting in the English version is atrocious but that's not the strong point of this game. This game is all about fast-paced robot fighting action and it delivers on that in droves.
Flower
Not exactly lesser known but I don't know enough people who have played it lol. It's an incredibly beautiful and relaxing game. Very simple, not a lot to really say about it. Just like Journey, it's one of those things you have to experience for yourself to really know what it's all about.
I am bored and waiting for my insomnia meds to kick in. Games!
Dark Wizard
Old Sega CD territory capture / strategy game with heavy emphasis on resource management. As with most older games of this type it looks boring if you don't like these types of games but I really liked this one because there were towns to visit, quests to perform, secrets to uncover, etc. I also enjoyed the fact that there were 4 main characters to choose from, each with a slightly different take on the story and playstyle, which was pretty rare when this game came out. So while you could simply play the game to the end without dealing the with RPG elements you were missing out on a large portion of the game.
Magic Pengel
In this game you draw your own characters and use those to play the game with. The first game was a Pokemon style game where the different colors gave different stats, so if you wanted to min max your character probably looked like a literal bag of dicks. The second one was more of an action game. A bit of a learning curve when it comes to making stuff, but tons of fun.
Cho Aniki
Because I am feeling silly. I think the games are quite fun though.
